The VGBC Conference 2010 was held on June 10-11, 2010 at the Hoa Binh Hotel, Hanoi - Vietnam. Following the successful first annual workshop in 2008 (Green Building and Climate Change Adaptation Workshop), this second annual workshop took the opportunity to official launch the LOTUS Non Residential pilot version, the first Green Building Rating Tool for Vietnam.
Together with the VGBC, Vietnamese and international experts shared the platform to deliver great information on Green Building Standards and Policies, as well as Green Products, Materials and Green Management Practices to promote a more sustainable and adaptive built environment in Vietnam.
Participants and speakers at the two days conference were a wide range of representatives from the VGBC, local and international organizations, partners and supporters (government, industry representatives, architects and engineers, academic researchers, etc...) In particular, the conference also attracted several guess-speakers from oversea such as Mr. Michell Swann (P.E., LEED AP, MDC Systems, USA), Dr. Nirmal Kishnani (National University of Singapore, Jury Chair FuturArc Prize + BCI Green Design Award), and Mr. Jimmy Lee (IES, Malaysia).
The opening conference on the first day (June 10th) was delivered by the VGBC Executive Director Yannick Millet with the presentation “Driving towards a sustainable built environment”. Its aim was to introduce VGBC development and strategy.
Next, the Pilot LOTUS Non-Residental Rating Tool was officially launch by Darren O’Dea – VGBC LOTUS Rating Manager. LOTUS is a market based assessment tool, applied on a voluntary basis. LOTUS Certified, LOTUS Silver, and LOTUS Gold are three certification levels for LOTUS Certification and LOTUS Accreditation for Professional Practitioners were introduced. Furthermore, “Advantages and Disadvantages of Green Building Certification” was thoroughly demonstrated by Melissa Merryweather (VGBC southern coordinator).
At this stage, there are several LOTUS pilot projects such as Green One UN House (Hanoi), Vietnam MocBai Office and Factory (Tay Ninh province), Truong Son Building (HCMC), and DOSTE Headquaters (HCMC). It is expected that number of projects registered with LOTUS will increase significantly in the near future.
Approach to the LOTUS rating tool is supported by several related Vietnamese governmental sectors (VGBC partners) such as Hanoi Energy Conservation Center (ECC Hanoi), Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), Ministry of Construction (MoC) and Vietnam Association for Building Materials (VABM). This was emphasized by various promising presentations such as “Building energy consumption baseline (benchmarks) for office buildings (ECC Hanoi), National Target Program and Energy Efficiency Labeling Practice (MOIT), Activities in the energy efficiency program for building construction (MOC), Promoting the use of Unburned Materials (VABM), and Energy audit, energy management in commercial buildings by Prof. Nguyen Huu Dung (Hanoi University of Architecture). These will be available on our website in the near future.
In particular, “ASHRAE Standard 189.1: The design of High-Performance Buildings” from USA was introduced and suggested by Mr. Michell Swann (P.E., LEED AP, MDC Systems) to enhance LOTUS.
The second day (June 11th) featured presentations about Green Products, Materials and Green Management Practices from VGBC’s leading green sponsor members (Holcim, Sant-Gobain, CBRE, Schneider, IES, Emerson Climate Technologies, UNDP).
This included ”Role of cement and concrete supplier to sustainable construction” by Holcim Vietnam, “Dry walls for sustainable development” by Saint-Gobain, emphasizing Gyproc contribution to LOTUS with regards to the Energy, Materials, Waste and Pollution, Health and Comfort, Adaptation & Mitigation Categories.
Energy efficiency was a clear focus at the conference: “Make the Most of Your Energy”, “Energy Efficient Transformer” by Schneider Electric, “Energy Efficient Air-Conditioning Technologies for Buildings” by Emerson Climate Technologies.
Furthermore, various interesting presentations were delivered such as “Property Management Operations in Vietnam – Real Life Numbers” by CBRE, “Operation and Maintenance for Sustainability” by Mitch Swann (MDC Systems, US), “Building Sustainability with Computer Simulation Tool” (IES), “Emerging Trends in Green Building Design in Southeast Asia – Reflections on Recent Award-Winning Projects” by Dr. Nirmal Kishnani.
The VGBC conference could not be happened without generous sponsors. 2010 event is sponsored by “Emerson Climate Technologies” Company. The VGBC would like to thank Emerson Climate Technology for sponsoring this important event, the historic milestone for VGBC mission that “Driving towards a Sustainable Built Environment for Vietnam”.
